9 Heat transfer terms

The glossary contains vocabulary and key concepts about the thermal analysis of heat sinks that are commonly used to enhance heat dissipation from electronic devices.

Heat sink
Noun.
A metallic heat exchanger designed to absorb and dissipate excess heat from one of the devices.
Example: A heat sink is a device commonly used to dissipate heat from a CPU in a computer.

Mesh
Noun.
A group of nodes that represent the shape of the geometry.
Example: A conformal mesh is used for parts joined by glue or welds.

Poisson's ratio
Noun.
The negative of the ratio of transverse strain to lateral or axial strain.
Example: For most common materials the Poisson's ratio is in the range of 0 - 0.5.

Static structural analysis
Noun.
The loads, stresses, strains, and other physical loads are assumed to not changing extremely with the changing time.
Example: A static structural analysis calculates the effect of steady loading conditions on a structure.

Temperature load
Noun.
Characteristic that allows simulating temperature changes over the model.
Example: Temperature load provides valuable information on how the structure of the model deforms due to a particular temperature change.

Thermal expansion coefficient
Noun.
The rate at which a material expands with an increase in temperature.
Example: Table 17-1 provides the linear thermal expansion coefficients of the most frequently used metals and allows.

Total deformation
Noun.
The deformation option where you can see all the deformation results related to your model, in three coordinates (X, Y, and Z).

Von Mises Stress
Noun.
A value used to determine if a given material will yield or fracture.
Example: The concept of Von mises stress arises from the distortion energy failure theory.

Noun.
A measure of elasticity, equal to the ratio of the stress acting on a substance to the strain produced.
